Assam's Gauhati High Court's additional judge, Justice Robin Phukan, has been promoted to the position of permanent judge. Following a proposal made by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 3, the nomination was officially announced by Kiren Rijiju, the union's minister of law. With a sanctioned strength of 30, the Gauhati high court is now operating with 24 judges.
The union law ministry's department of justice released a notification.
A second judge is appointed for a two-year term.
Kiren Rijiju, the minister of union law, reaffirmed the development.
"Judge of that HC has been appointed as Shri Justice Robin Phukan, extra judge of Gauhati HC. I wish him the very best," Rijjiju remarked.
Notably, on May 3, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended that Justice Phukan be appointed a permanent judge.
On March 23, the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court and two other senior-most justices had urged that Justice Phukan be given permanent status.
The Gauhati High Court has 24 judges on staff as of May 1 compared to a sanctioned strength of 30 and a vacancy of 6.
